Taking a deep breath. Starting fresh. My new year goals.

Here I am, sitting here, thinking of what to write for this blog. I wanted to do a wrap up of the year, and a look forward to 2017. But honestly? I can't even come to grips with 2016. It literally seems surreal.

I'm frightened for really the first time in my life. I have been so fortunate to have been sheltered and protected from the big bad world. But here it is and I have to stand up for me. And, let me tell you, I'm a fighter. I guess that will be my focus for 2017. To speak up in no uncertain terms about what matters to me. Because there has to be some path forward. We are moving. This is actually happening.

With that in mind, I'm organizing myself into a few categories. A few ways I'm concentrating my energy in 2017.

New Year Goal #1: Dream Big

A friend of mine wrote a FANTASTIC book, called "The Motion of the Ocean" and she wrote, among other things, about having a BHAG. That stands for a Big Hairy Audacious Goal. I mean, this is the woman who sailed the Pacific Ocean on her honeymoon. So, yeah, she dreams big! If she can, then I can too!

My business coach, Misha, sent me an article the other day with advice from designers about making your home family-friendly. She joked that that would be my next step.

Well! While I may not make a Domino magazine article, I am aiming to be known as THE family friendly designer who has the ADDED benefits of working virtually with families. I work hard while you get on with the rest of your life and you end up with the tools to create a warm, comfortable, family-friendly home that speaks to you, your loved ones and family (which may or may not be loved, ha). I'm working my a$$ off over here, but you can help me achieve this goal too! If you know friends who would benefit from this? Send them my way! I'd love to meet them.

New Year Goal #2: Take Pleasure From Small Victories

Now, don't get me wrong. I am under no illusion that January or February is going to hit and BAM, business will explode. It won't! Neither will my children turn into prodigies in every area of life (they are ALREADY the cutest bugs out there; got that one in the bag). But, just like with raising kiddos, if you put the time, love, and energy into a little person, those connections will be made.

They'll grow and develop! And they'll be off to Kindergarten and I'll be a blubbering mess. I want to make sure I take the time to notice the little wins in business AND in life. The hesitant sounding out of new words (my baby is READING!! blubber blubber), the knowledge that more and more of you are getting to know me and that we might work together. These are the things that make the world go 'round

New Year Goal #3: Give Myself Grace

Things are going to happen along the way. There will be days where I don't feel particularly like I measure up as a designer or a mama. This happens. But I know, in my mind, that these days are the "off" days. They're not the norm. And I will get past them!

In the moment it does no one any good to further beat myself up, so I'll do what I can to learn and move forward. I WILL figure out the jigsaw puzzle that is a room's furniture plan and I WILL learn to not buy the socks with the funny seams (don't they ALL have funky seams??) It's what we do. Having friends who get you is super important with this, too, so keep that crew of yours close!

Phew! I feel better getting this down on virtual paper and organizing myself a bit. But what about you? I hate "resolutions", I mean who can live up to that?!? But I do wonder if you're making changes or taking different approaches. So let me know! Either in the comments or shoot me an email! I get energized by what's going on with you, so this is win-win!

AND, if making your home just as fabulous as you are is on your list, well, you know how to get that started (and if you don't? Click here, and you'll be teleported to the shop).
